Pets and Your HVAC System
Your indoor air quality doesn't need to suffer.
Did you know that your pets can effect your indoor air quality?
Take care of your heating and cooling units even while co-existing with your furry friends.
The pets we bring into our homes are part of the family. To keep everyone healthy, we need to keep our homes healthy, too. Things like dander and fur can effect the indoor air quality, as well as the efficiency of your furnace or air conditioner. If your family members are experiencing headaches, nausea, coughing or sneezing, it could mean that your air quality needs some attention.
All pets have dander, even ones without fur. Just like we shed skin, so do they. A lot of people are allergic or have asthma (which can worsen with pet issues) so you may need to keep it under control. Besides trying to keep them and your home clean, there are some ways to keep your air clean, too.
Follow these tips to help keep your home systems functioning at their best:
Change your air filters more often. Look for ones that mention HEPA that will help with pet dander.
Install a UV air purifier. These will eliminate the spores and particles instead of just trapping them. Ask Millenium Mechanical for more details on this service.
Maintain your home's ductwork. Yearly check-ups on your air conditioner or furnace, is essential.
Vacuum your carpets often and clean them once a year. Spring is a great time to do this, when the opportunity to open the windows is available.
Bathe and groom your pets often. Less shedding means less fur in the filter and ducts.
For outdoor a/c units, check them often for contaminants such as fur, if your animal goes near it. Also, ensure that there is not damage from clawing or 'marking'.
Make sure that you have the proper enclosure for your outdoor a/c system, as well.
This will, hopefully, reduce the amount of respiratory discomfort and keep your air quality at it's best. Keep in mind that having your furnace cleaned in the summer months, is a great idea.
